Maribeth Anders and John Chiaromonte: The Responsibility of Internal Forces is on display in the museum’s Trinity Gallery for Arkansas Artists from May 13 through August 8, 2010. Little Rock artist Maribeth Anders’ sculpture explores house and boat forms, and symbolizes her own journey through time, chance and change. A prevalent theme in her work is one of overcoming adversity, picking up the pieces and getting on with life. Batesville artist John Chiaromonte’s recent box paintings draw the viewer to the world below the surface of things. In them, he juxtaposes quiet contemplation with self-imposed atrocities, and blurs the lines between creator and creation. pARTy for Peg by Monticello artist Alice Guffey Miller honors the memory of longtime museum friend, volunteer and commissioner, Peg Newton Smith. Eight aluminum figures are arranged in a square dance, an iconic Arkansas art form, with a ninth fiddling figure to the side. People across the state donated “pieces of history” to embed in the sculpture’s bases—all 75 Arkansas counties are represented. A website, www.PartyForPeg.org, will launch May 8 and include a searchable database of all the objects embedded in the sculpture. Historic Arkansas Museum is open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1 - 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission to the galleries and parking are free; tours of historic grounds are $2.50 for adults, $1 for children under 18, $1.50 for senior citizens. The Historic Arkansas Museum Store is open 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1 - 4 p.m. on Sunday. Historic Arkansas Museum is an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, which was created in 1975 to preserve and enhance the heritage of the state of Arkansas. Other agencies of the department are Delta Cultural Center in Helena, Arkansas Arts Council, Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, Mosaic Templars Cultural Center and Old State House Museum.
