The Miniature Worlds of Bruce Metcalf
Organized by the Palo Alto Art Center
Palo Alto, California
May 28 - August 22, 2010
Sam Strauss, Sr. Gallery
The Miniature Worlds of Bruce Metcalf is the first major exhibition and
catalogue focused solely on the artist's truly engaging and spirited
work. Born in 1949, Bruce Metcalf has long been revered as a leading art
jeweler, curator and critic of contemporary craft and essayist. This
exhibition examines social, moral and political issues, many of which
Metcalf has also raised in his essays. Curated by Signe Mayfield,
curator at the Palo Alto Art Center, this exhibition features 70 pieces
dating from the 1970s to the present, on loan from the collections of
the artist, museums and private lenders across the country. Cast in
silver or carved in wood, Metcalf's vulnerable protagonists act out
issues on the stage of miniature worlds. In their dual life as wearable
brooches, they venture into the world, where they engage the
unsuspecting viewer with their stories and distinctive visual language.
