The William F. Laman Public Library System announced Tuesday that it will host the final showing of the traveling exhibition "Small Works on Paper: Retro Works." "Small Works on Paper: Retro Works" is a retrospective collection of 30 outstanding pieces created by Arkansas artists between 1989 and 1997. The exhibit, curated by the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas and the Arkansas Arts Council, features works that were previously shown in the annual "Small Works on Paper" touring exhibitions and were purchased with grants from the International Paper Foundation and donated to the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas. The exhibit, sponsored by Mitchell Williams law firm, will show from September 7 through October 11 in Laman Library's state-of-the-art exhibit hall at 2801 Orange Street in North Little Rock. In March 2010, Laman's exhibit hall, which was built to American Association of Museums standards in April 2009, became the first North Little Rock gallery to ever host a Smithsonian exhibition. The exhibit can be viewed from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday; and 1- 5 p.m. on Sunday. "We are very excited to host an exhibit of such quality work by Arkansas artists," said Jeff Baskin, executive director of the William F. Laman Public Library System. "Part of our mission is to encourage the creation of Arkansas art. Hosting exhibits like 'Small Works on Paper: Retro Works' and creating grant programs like the Laman Library Writers Fellowship help us accomplish that goal." Founded in the late 1980s, the "Small Works on Paper" exhibition was created to exhibit small works of art (no larger than 24" x 24") by Arkansas artists in a show that traveled throughout the state. The William F. Laman Public Library System, founded in 1946 and composed of a main library at 2801 Orange Street in North Little Rock and a branch library at 506 Main Street in Argenta, is the official library system of North Little Rock. Although the William F. Laman Public Library System is independent from other library systems in central Arkansas, anyone living in Pulaski County may freely obtain a library card through the William F. Laman Public Library System. For more information, visit www.lamanlibrary.org. The Arkansas Arts Council was established in 1966 to enable the state of Arkansas to receive funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1971, Act 359 (A.C.A . § 13-8-101 et seq.) gave independent agency status to the Arts Council, with an executive director and a 17-member council appointed by the governor. In 1975, the Arts Council became an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.
