Maritza Davila is Professor of Fine Arts at the Memphis College of Art where she has taught drawing and printmaking since 1982. Professor Davila has exhibited around the world and has works in collections in the United States, Europe, the Caribbean and Asia. She has received awards in the U.S., Puerto Rico and France. She is owner of the Atabeira Press studio. According to the artist, a "thread that runs through my work is the collection of experiences that, through blood and culture, make me who I am. My work reflects these histories and choices bound up in the qualities of my essential self. I use frames within frames, house shapes, arches, doorways, lace patterns and the landscape as metaphors for home and the journeys in life related to ancestry, memories, family, politics and the spiritual, exploring how those qualities affect each other and the space they occupy. In artwork that celebrates the past, creates in the present and records for the future, time thus becomes the element that binds medium and concept." Her work has a distinct quality that makes her exhibit a must see. Rex DeLoney is an art instructor and Fine Arts Department chairman at Little Rock Central High School. Mr. Deloney holds a B.A. in commercial art from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway and an M.Ed from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash. Mr. Deloney’s bold and colorful artwork conveys the messages of hope, faith and the everyday joys and struggles of life. The innocence of children, the wisdom and knowledge of the aged and the emotions of life’s journeys are all subject matter for him. Mr. Deloney's work is familiar to many in Central arkansas. However, if you are not familiar with his work, you will find that his paintings are intentionally created to investigate symbolic meanings and emotional responses to color. His commentary on life as seen through his own perspective of having lived it, struggled with it, and come to terms with it and the medium for expressing it that he loves makes his work both compelling and thought provoking. With line, color, texture and shape he brings to the viewer a profound sense of joy and acceptance. The Exhibit will run from September 23-October 4 in the Gallery in the Fine Arts Center at UAPB. Opening reception:6-8 p.m. Sept. 23. Daily Hours (Monday through Friday) 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For special viewing arrangements please call the Department of Art, UAPB: 870-575-8236
