White County Extension Offers Beginning Tai Chi White County Extension will be offering Beginning Tai Chi classes starting October 11, 2010. Classes will meet every Monday and Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. for eight weeks at the old Carder Buick building at Hartsfield and Hawkins Drive in Searcy. Cost of the class is $20. No special equipment is necessary for Tai Chi, just comfortable clothing. Tai chi may be preformed barefoot, in comfortable socks or in socks and sneakers. Soft soles on shoes that can grip the floor are best (like ballet shoes). No thick sole athletic shoes please. Tai Chi is designed to not only improve physical aspects, but also the quality of life of the participants. The “Sun Form” has been proven to improve mobility, breathing and relaxation through deliberate, agile movements. Tai Chi can benefit everyone and can be practiced almost everywhere. Tai Chi is a gentle exercise that originated in ancient China. It has been scientifically proven to increase flexibility, and muscular strength and fitness. Recent studies have shown that a Tai Chi program for persons with arthritis is safe and beneficial, resulting in positive outcomes such as reduced pain, stiffness, and fatigue, and improved physical function, muscle strength, flexibility/mobility, and balance. The University of Arkansas has partnered with the Arthritis Foundation to provide this program at this low cost. Please call the White County Extension Office at 501-268-5394, for more information. Preregistration is required by October 4 and enrollment is limited. Enrollment forms are available at the Extension Office or by calling the Extension Office. The Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service offers its programs to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status, and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The Cooperative Extension Service is part of the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture. Persons with disabilities who require alternative means for communication of program information (large print, audiotapes, etc.) should notify the county Extension office (or other appropriate office) as soon as possible prior to the activity.
