Cantrell Gallery to Host BRAZIL: An Endangered Beauty –Recent Watercolors and Pastels by Kitty Harvill of Little Rock and Brazil Opening Night Reception: Friday, March 11, 6-8:00 pm. Limited engagement! - exhibit continues through Saturday April 9. A portion of the proceeds from this exhibit will benefit Audubon Arkansas, Society for Wildlife Research and Environmental Education (a partner of The Nature Conservancy) and Mater Natura-Environmental Studies Institute. Now having dual residency in both the states and Brazil, Harvill divides her time between the two countries, currently specializing in wildlife art and specifically endangered species. Harvill is a Signature Member of The Artists for Conservation organization (AFC). It is the leading collective of wildlife artists worldwide, spanning 5 continents and 27 countries. Membership is limited to 500 artists and is by invitation only. Selection is based not only on excellence of artwork but on commitment to and participation in conservation efforts. Harvill is the only member in Brazil and also the only member from Arkansas. Her most recent honor was being selected for inclusion in the 2010 Art of Conservation International Exhibit. Harvill feels that it is her mission to help bring awareness to the degradation and devastation of the Atlantic Coastal Rainforest, through her artwork. Much of her work is focused on endangered species and the beauty of the Atlantic Forest. Her use of color, both dramatic and delicate, her instinctual response to the play of light on her subject continue to be defining characteristics of the artist as she strives to present the viewer with the wonder, magic, and ultimately the importance of a severely threatened area of our planet. Artist Statement: Our relationship with Nature should be a reciprocal one. We, who are working in conservation, see ourselves as helping Nature. It is Nature that has the greatest gifts to give to us. If you have ever spent extended time in Nature you know the solace and peace that you derive from that experience. As an artist, I believe one absorbs that mystery into one's very being, into one's soul. The works we then produce express these very deep feelings and it is this that we wish to convey to our viewers, so that they too may be touched by the healing power of Nature. We are bombarded daily with images of violence, corruption, and despair from 24 hour news channels to images of every kind on the internet. Our souls need a healing balm to counteract all the negativity we take in. It is important to remember that the gifts Nature gives to us go beyond the air that we breath, the water we consume from rivers and streams, and the earth which provides an abundance of food for our bodily nourishment. As if that were not enough, it is the profound mystery of Nature that feeds our souls. When we commune with and experience the mysteries of Nature, we commune with the mystery of the Creator. Born in Clarksville, Tennessee, Kitty Harvill received her BFA cum laude in painting from SMU including a semester of study in Paris. She received an MA in art therapy from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and an AA in illustration from Ray College, Chicago.
