Experience a Trip Down Rock and Roll Memory Lane at Laman Library NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (April 18, 2011) – The William F. Laman Public Library hosts Feelin’ Groovy: Rock and Roll Graphics, 1966 – 1970, June 10 – August 19, 2011. During the 1960’s, a new wave of rock bands converged in the Haight-Asbury district in San Francisco. Their concerts were advertised with handbills and posters illustrated with vivid colors, thick distorted lettering and bizarre imagery. These handbills and posters from the 1960s and 70s are part of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) Permanent Collection of Art. The UALR Permanent Collection houses over 120 psychedelic examples of graphic design from this era. Imaginative and visually dense, the poster artists drew influences from: • the organic and flowing Art Nouveau style; • the bright colors and bold graphics of Pop Art; and • the optical illusion of movement created in Op Art with the use of line and color. Visitors to the gallery will enjoy the “trip” down memory lane as they view vibrant, patterned filled rock posters and handbills advertising concerts by The Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Fugs and more. The Feelin’ Groovy exhibit is free and open to the public. The William F. Laman Public Library System, founded in 1946 and composed of a main library at 2801 Orange Street in North Little Rock and a branch library at 506 Main Street in Argenta, is the official library system of North Little Rock. The William F. Laman Public Library System is independent from other library systems in central Arkansas. However, any resident of Pulaski County may apply for a library card through the William F. Laman Public Library System.
