Lake Ouachita State Park offering Bird Island Tours Bird Island, located in the middle of Lake Ouachita, has been named an Important Bird Area (IBA) by the National Audubon Society. IBAs are places that are important for the conservation of one or more bird species. Bird Island hosts 30 to 50 thousand purple martins each night in late July and early August as well as other migrating birds. Many who visit the evening roost are delighted to see several species of egrets, herons, ibises and other long-legged waders nesting on the small island alongside the roosting martins. Lake Ouachita State Park schedules evening barge tours to Bird Island several times each week during July and August. Tickets for the tour are $9 for adults, $5 for kids 6-12 and free for those under 6. Reservations are required and space is limited. Contact the park at (501) 767-9366 to make reservations. You may also contact Park Interpreter, Susan Adkins, by email at susan.adkins@arkansas.gov for more information.
