Civil War Exhibits at the UAMS Library August 15, 2011 – September 24, 2011 “Civil War Wounds: Causes and Treatment, Arkansas 1861-1865” is the exhibit on the first floor of the UAMS Library. It is in the exhibit cases to the left as you enter the Library. Curated by Bill Gurley, PhD, UAMS College of Pharmacy and Amanda Saar, MSLS, Head, UAMS Library’s Historical Research Center it presents a view of the wounds, the weapons that caused them, and the treatments that were available during the Civil War in Arkansas. The first case ties together the founders of UAMS and the Civil War experiences of each founder. UAMS was not founded until 1879, but the founders brought to the teaching their Civil War experiences. The second case shows the types of weapons used in the War, using some examples collected in Arkansas. The items shown are on loan from Dr. Gurley’s collection, as well as two items from the Old State House. The third case presents information on the treatments available, and the fourth case showcases various books, historic and contemporary, about the Civil War in the Trans-Mississippi West. “Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War” is the exhibit on the second floor of the Library. A traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine, it outlines the basic information about the effect of the War on those who fought, were injured, and survived.
