Laman Library to Host Joint Art Exhibition with Birch Tree Communities & the Arkansas State Hospital NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (July 6, 2011) -- The William F. Laman Public Library System announces their next exhibition, Expressing Ourselves: Original Works by the Artists of Birch Tree Communities and the Arkansas State Hospital. The exhibit will show from September 1 through October 20, 2011 in Laman Library's exhibit hall located at 2801 Orange Street in North Little Rock. It is free and open to the public. Expressing Ourselves: Original Works by the Artists of Birch Tree Communities and the Arkansas State Hospital brings both of these organizations together to showcase artwork produced by their members. Both programs use the artistic experience to create a level playing field for people with mental illness to communicate with others, enhance self-confidence and self-esteem and allow individuals to express their emotions and thoughts in a safe and powerful way. Beyond building just within the individual, the arts are used as a way of building a bridge to the community. Selected members works will be on display. Founded over 12 years ago, Birch Tree’s Expressive Arts program has grown and continues to teach its members the fundamental principles of the arts. Under the direction of artist Jim Tindall, Birch Tree’s artists have sold over $200,000.00 in art, photography, poetry and music. All the profits go to the artists directly. Many members have found a new identity through this powerful process. The Creative Expressions Program at the Arkansas State Hospital positively impacts the lives of many Arkansans and seeks to raise awareness for individuals living with mental illness through the visual arts. The program serves the entire psychiatric hospital facility from acute admission, forensic, and adolescent units through 13 weekly art classes. Under Program Director Donala Jordan and Coordinator Ariston Jacks, the program empowers individuals by providing opportunities in the community in the field of visual arts. The William F. Laman Public Library System, founded in 1946 and composed of a main library at 2801 Orange Street in North Little Rock and a branch library at 506 Main Street in Argenta, is the official library system of North Little Rock. Although the William F. Laman Public Library System is independent from other library systems in central Arkansas, anyone living in Pulaski County may apply for a library card through the William F. Laman Public Library System. For more information, visit www.lamanlibrary.org or call (501)758-1720.
