The Arkansas League of Artists has created an annual juried exhibition to showcase their members. This year’s exhibit will be at Cantrell Gallery. There will be an Opening Night Reception on Friday, September 9, 6-8:00. The reception is open to the public. Many of the included artists will be present. This will be a wonderful opportunity to see the selected works and meet the artists. This ALA ArtShow was established to bolster the Arkansas League of Artists significance and prestige as a state-wide artist organization, and to afford the members an opportunity to distinguish themselves within the Arkansas artist community with a Signature Membership in the ALA. Signature Membership is achieved by having at least one piece accepted into at least two juried art exhibitions held for ALA members. This 2nd annual exhibit was juried by esteemed artist and educator, Stephen Cefalo. Biographical information about the juror can be found at the bottom. The competition was open to two and three dimensional works of art by current active members of ALA. The media allowed for entry were drawings, paintings (including mixed media), original prints and sculptures. Cefalo selected 47 pieces for this exhibit and there are prize winners in each category. The categories are: still life/floral, figurative, animal/wildlife, land/sea/cityscape and abstract/modern. The 2nd Annual ALA artShow will continue through October 29. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday, 10-5:00. For further information, please contact Cindy Scott-Huisman by calling 501-224-1335. Stephen Cefalo Bio: Cefalo was born in Nuremberg, Germany, hometown of painter Albrecht Durer, on the birthday of French painter Charles Le Brun and German painter-sculptor Franz Von Stuck. Given these circumstances, Stephen felt predestined to be an artist. When he was ready to start his undergraduate studies, he attended the School of Visual Artists, Savannah, GA Campus, but when the SVA Savannah campus closed in 1997, he and his family moved to the SVA main campus in New York City, NY where he studied with Steven Assael and Max Ginsburg, completing his BFA. He continued to study privately with Assael while working in Soho as an assistant painter for Jeff Koons, and later in Times Square as an in-house illustrator for Nickelodeon. He and his family left New York shortly after the September 11th attacks, moving to Indiana, where he completed his MFA in Painting at the Indiana University in Bloomington in 2004. After teaching for two years at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, he accepted an offer for a three-year position as Artist in Residence for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's Painting program. Upon completion, he and his family have decided to stay in Arkansas. Stephen is both an accomplished artist and art instructor. He is currently represented locally at Gallery 26 and by the Ann Nathan Gallery in Chicago, IL. Stephen is an Instructor at the Arkansas Arts Center Museum School in Little Rock, AR, and conducts independent workshops in drawing and painting at the Cefalo Studio.
