Al Allen: A Retrospective to be Presented at Laman Library NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (September 7, 2011) – The William F. Laman Public Library System announces its next exhibition, Al Allen: A Retrospective. The exhibit will show from October 28 through December 12, 2011 in Laman Library's exhibit hall located at 2801 Orange Street in North Little Rock. It is free and open to the public. This is the first major retrospective of the work of Arkansas artist and author Al Allen in North Little Rock, Arkansas. The last retrospective of Allen’s work was at the Arkansas Arts Center in 1995. Born in 1925, Al Allen was known throughout his lifetime as Arkansas’ premier painter of southern realism. His ultra realistic interpretations of windows and the sunlight and shadows it cast on rural and urban homes in the South, created a following which led throughout his lifetime and beyond. Collectors of note include the Arkansas Arts Center, The Brooks Museum in Memphis, Stephens Inc. and many notable Arkansas collectors. This exhibition will feature original works on canvas and constructions from the 1950's to 2008. The exhibition is curated by Greg Thompson of Greg Thompson Fine Art and the Laman Public Library System. The art will run the gamut of this important Arkansan’s illustrious career with paintings borrowed from his estate and several prominent collections across the country. The William F. Laman Public Library System, founded in 1946 and composed of a main library at 2801 Orange Street in North Little Rock and a branch library at 506 Main Street in Argenta, is the official library system of North Little Rock. Although the William F. Laman Public Library System is independent from other library systems in central Arkansas, anyone living in Pulaski County may apply for a library card through the William F. Laman Public Library System. For more information, visit www.lamanlibrary.org or call (501)758-1720.
