River Valley Arts Center Announces Two December Exhibits A representation of the most outstanding creative efforts of young Arkansas artists in grades K- 12 will be exhibited at River Valley Arts Center, 1001 East B Street, Russellville during the month of December along with works by Laura Burton, winner of the 2011 CenturyLink Collegiate Exhibition and Competition. Young Arkansas Artists This year’s selections were made from 654 entries from 182 schools throughout Arkansas and submitted to Arkansas Arts Center for their annual Young Arkansas Artists Competition and Exhibition. The exhibit contains the work of two Pottsville students: Marissa Thompson and Madison Johnson both of Pottsville Junior High School. From the 654 entries, 131 were selected by juror Blaine Caldwell, a professor of art at University of the Ozarks, to hang in Arkansas Arts Center galleries March 15 – April 17, 2011. From these 131 entries Arkansas Arts Center’s curatorial staff selected 90 works for special recognition which were grouped in 5 traveling exhibitions for circulation statewide during the 2011-12 school year. “We are delighted that the work of these two Pottsville students was chosen for the traveling exhibits. It speaks very well of them to have gone through this rigorous process and been selected,” said Betty LaGrone, executive director of River Valley Arts Center. Speaking of all the works chosen, Joe Lampo, interim director of Arkansas Arts Center said, “The student’s art is exciting, full of imagination and quite impressive. We are very proud to exhibit their works.” Laura Burton Exhibit Laura Burton is a native of Fort Smith and graduated from Arkansas Tech University with a Bachelors of Arts degree. Her emphasis is painting, working primarily in oil and acrylic. She also enjoys graphite, watercolor and pastels. Many or her works feature her favorite subjects to paint, portraits of her family and friends. Laura won ‘Best of Show’ in the River Valley Arts Center’s 2011 CenturyLink Collegiate Competition and Exhibition with an oil titled “Self Portrait.” Her winnings included a $150 cash award sponsored by CenturyLink and the opportunity to exhibit in this December 2011 Exhibition. Both exhibits will open with a reception Sunday, December 5, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at River Valley Arts Center. The public is invited and encouraged to attend and support these young artists. There is no charge for the exhibit or reception.
