Sergeant Irvin served as a combat infantryman in World War II having fought in Europe and Africa, some of the deadliest combat of the War. After returning home, the Army honorably discharged Sgt. Irvin with a Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, and a European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal for his lengthy service.
