The school itself may be publicly funded, but the athletic programs are operated on a lot of donations from a lot of boosters, in addition to gate receipts, sales of merchandise, etc. And donors have the freedom to give their money as they choose. I am sure I don't want to know what would happen if I expressed my opinion at work and offended our customers.

So, Jake, the Government is not prohibiting any expression of ideas. The people who provide financial support, on the other hand, also have the freedom to express their ideas. If that expression of ideas includes withholding that financial support, there is still no First Amendment violation.

You do realize that the 1st Amendment says that you can not be arrested for exercising your free speech. Yes, these players have the right to all the free speech they want, but that does not mean there are no repercussions for their actions. Coach Dykes has the authority select the players who will be on the court to play the game. The University has the authority to select the players who are invited to receive scholarships to attend the University. I have the right to say whatever I want to say while I am at work but I can promise you I would be relieved of my job duties if my words were harmful to my employer.
