Panel to be advocate for Hispanic students

— The League of United Latin American Citizens-Arkansas has formed a committee on education.

The committee's mission will be to promote educational policies and to provide a resource for school districts across Arkansas that want information concerning the needs of the Hispanic community, such as programs to help non-English- speaking students, the organization said in a news release.

The committee will be called The League of United Latin American Citizens-Arkansas State Committee on Education.

A news release said the committee seeks to serve as an advocate, particularly for Hispanic students.

The committee will also serve as a resource for communities across the state and will provide information on parenteducation programs that have been implemented in different parts of Arkansas.

Committee members are:

Maria G. Touchstone, League of United Latin American Citizens-Arkansas deputy state director, English as a Second Language coordinator, North Little Rock School District. She will serve as committee chairman.

Andre Guerrero, Arkansas Department of Education-Minority Student Affairs.

Maria Elena de Avila-Peters, governor's office, liaison to the Hispanic community.

Rey Hernandez, education advocate, the league's council in Northwest Arkansas and a member of the league's state board.

Maribel Siems, early childhood education specialist, North Little Rock School District.

Terry Trevino-Richard, professor of sociology, University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Maricela Garcia, after-school education programs. Garcia is a student at UALR's W.H. Bowen School of Law and the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service.

Jose Bustos, education advocate, president League of United Latin American Citizens-Arkansas Council 766 Russellville.

Sabrina Zarco, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Welcome the Children Project presenter and cultural diversity trainer.

Maria Garcia, Little Rock School District Student Assignment Office and English as a Second Language liaison.

The committee said in the news release it would welcome any assistance from educators throughout the state.
