JOSEPH DANIEL McQUANY, 78, founder and executive director of Serenity Park, an alcohol and drugtreatment program, died Thursday afternoon. Known simply as 'Joe' to tens of thousands of recovering alcoholics and addicts in the United States and seven foreign countries, he dedicated his life to helping others afterhe achieved sobriety in 1962.

"If I hadn't been an alcoholic," he once told an audience in Texas, "I probably would have amounted to nothing." Joe's last great dream was the creation of a treatment facility for women. He lived to see construction completed two weeks ago. Sitting on a patio overlooking the new building just days before he was hospitalized, Joe said, "It's gonna be okay." Over the course of his lifetime, Joe was widely honored by various organizations and individuals, including former President Bill Clinton. Yet, he remained a humble man, living a simple life and never seeking personal recognition. His desire was always, as he explained it, "to help people." Despite a four-year struggle with the crippling effects of Parkinson's disease, Joe never retired and continued to oversee the management of the Park and spend time with the men in treatment.

Joe gave of himself to people of all races and all creeds, regardless of their station in life. The Park has quietly served everyone from professionals to the penniless. Joe's soft brown eyes looked beyond the superficial and connected with the souls of the men he served.

Within hours of his death, the Serenity Park Web site had recorded condolences from ten foreign countries and nearly every state.

Joe was born on Nov. 16, 1928, to Kelly McQuany and Ada Beaty McQuany in Louisville, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a grandson. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Loubelle McQuany; a sister, Doris Ada McQuany Norman; a daughter, Janice McQuany Robinson and her husband, Harold; a son, Nathan McQuany and his wife, Phyllis; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two nephews, one niece andfriends around the world.

Joe began organizing AA groups in 1968 and by 1971 had gained such a reputation for his leadership and treatment skills that he was awarded a small federal grant to help alcoholics find treatment. The problem was that there were few treatment resources. Seeing the need andwith limited financing, Joe set up the original Serenity House. The demand for help was great, and many found sobriety under his care.

In 1972, Joe moved the program to a large house at 2500 Broadway. After 17 years that house became an extended care home for chemical-free living, and the treatment program moved to a larger facility, its present location on Roosevelt Road.

In the mid-seventies, Joe began developing Recovery Dynamics, a treatment model based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. As word of the success of the program spread, Joe was invited to train others in its use. For 25 years, he did 25 to 50 presentations a year in the United States and abroad.

The Kelly Foundation, a nonprofit corporation also founded by Joe, handles the printing and international distribution of Recovery Dynamics manuals and other books Joe wrote on the Twelve Steps. The Foundation also provides training and consultation to recovery programs around the world.

Joe co-founded the Wolfe Street Foundation in 1982, where hundreds of AA members gather throughout the week.

Joe will lie in state at the Wolfe Street Foundation at 1210 Wolfe Street from early Wednesday into the evening. The family will receive visitors at Wolfe Street from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church at 4823 Woodlawn Avenue, Little Rock.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Serenity Home for Women, 2801 West Roosevelt Road, Little Rock, Ark., 72204.

NEWPORT - Eran Bartley Pickens (Mrs. Fred M. Pickens, Jr.) died peacefully at her home in Newport on Oct. 26, 2007, just days after her 93rd birthday. Born in Austin, Texas, to Judge and Mrs. Thomas M. Bartley, they moved to Waco, and she attended the Waco Public Schools. After graduation from Baylor University, she worked in a variety of capacities at the Episcopal Church in Waco and at Elliot & Eubank, a brokerage house.

On April 12, 1947, she married the dashing young attorney Fred M. Pickens Jr., and moved to his hometown of Newport where they built a home on the edge of Remmel Park. The great joy of her life was their only daughter, Eran, "Little E," whom she adored. Mrs. Pickens became active in the life of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, teaching Sunday School, serving on the Vestry, presiding over the state Episcopal Churchwomen and chairing the Christmas Bazaar. The "sewing ladies" at the church became her longtime Tuesday commitment. She also served as a member of the board of the W.A. Billingsly Memorial Library.

An avid reader of the New Yorker, a wordsmith, she thrived on the New York Times crossword puzzles, and was a producer of fine needlework. Eran was a master above all else of the art of friendship. Over the years she amassed a legion of friends and admirers both in Newport and in her travels with Fred across the country and around the world. The people she loved became her special projects, whom she showered with her affection and with her keen insights.

She was a Grande Damme in the finest sense of that term, setting a standard in Newport for sparking conversation and awareness of the larger world in which she lived. Much like Katharine Hepburn in appearance and manner, she will be remembered for her keen intelligence, her compassion and wit and her commitment to the principles of her faith.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Fred M. Pickens.

She is survived by her daughter, Eran Pickens West; son-in-law, Britton Reed West; four grandchildren, Walter Britton West and wife Fiona Louppe West, Martha Eran West, Thomas Pickens West, Elizabeth Bartley West; and her most loving and dedicated caregivers, Mary Ferrell, Patty Ferrell, Marie Hall, Sandra Blevins, Future Lawson, and Jean Weaver Young.
