LPGA P&G BEAUTY NORTHWEST ARKANSAS CHAMPIONSHIP: Sudden separation

Seon Hwa Lee birdies No. 18 for victory

ROGERS - On an afternoon in which it seemed no one could make a run, Seon Hwa Lee outlasted the field.

After making 10 consecutive pars, Lee's 3-foot foot birdie putt on the 18th hole gave her a one-stroke victory in the LPGA P&G Beauty Northwest Arkansas Championship on Sunday at Pinnacle Country Club.

Lee, 22, shot a bogey-free, 4-under-par 68 to survive the challenge of as many as six players in contention. At times, as many as five were tied for the lead - all at once. One by one they dropped off the pace, leaving Lee to claim her second LPGA Tour victory this year.

"It was a really tough day. The weather was really hard, and everything was really hard. But I really felt good about my game. And every single shot was [what] I wanted today," said Lee, who earned $544,000.

Lee's score of 15-under-par 201 was one stroke better than Meena Lee, who made bogey on the 17th hole and missed a birdie attempt on 18, and Jane Park, who finished nearly two hours earlier after shooting a 10-under-par 62 on Sunday.

Karen Stupples, Ai Miyazato,Kristy McPherson and Angela Park all finished at 13 under. And all, except Stupples, had opportunities to take control of the tournament at different points in the afternoon.

Jane Park's round, tying the course record and best score on the LPGA Tour this year set by Angela Park on Saturday, included a birdie putt that lipped out on the 17th hole for a par. As Park completed her postround interviews, she didn't think she had a chance.

"The girls at the top are fantastic players. And scoring conditions are absolutely pristine out there right now," said Jane Park, who began the day at 4 under. "There's a lot of birdie holes out there. And I wouldn't be surprised if I was somewhere in the top five by the end of the day."

No one could take advantage of those conditions as Jane Park stayed in contention until the final two groups.

McPherson was the first to try and pull away with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 11th hole. It came just as Seon Hwa Lee and Meena Lee missed makable birdie putts and put McPherson at 15 under.

McPherson continued to hold the lead for the next hour but missed a birdie opportunity on the 13th hole when she three-putted from about 100 feet and settled for par. She then hit into a bunker on the 14th and made double bogey to turn the lead over to Seon Hwa Lee, Meena Lee and Jane Park at 14 under.

Meena Lee was next, taking the lead at the par-3, 15th hole with a perfect 8-iron to 15 feet. She made the straight-in putt to get to 15 under, one shot better than Seon Hwa Lee and Jane Park.

Seon Hwa Lee wasn't making any birdies, but kept tapping in pars to stay close. Finally, Meena Lee made a mistake. On the 183-yard, par 3 17th hole, Meena Lee hit a 4-iron into the mowed area to the right of the green. She still had a good lie, thanks to the lift, clean and place rules being used. But her chip slid by the hole 6 feet, and she missed the come-backer for a bogey, putting herself, Seon Hwa Lee and Jane Park back in a threeway tie for the lead at 14 under.

"I talked to my caddie and my iron was a little bit short to the green, and I hit it a little bad," Meena Lee said.

Seon Hwa Lee wasn't aware of the scores, but figured she needed to make a birdie on the18th hole. She hit a driver and 3-wood to 98 yards. From there, she hit a pitching wedge that hit the back of the green and spun back to three feet from the cup.

"When I was on the green, I saw the scoreboard. She was 15 under and through 16th hole. I didn't know about she made birdie on 17," Seon Hwa Lee said. "My birdie putt was only about three feet and I think about it. I think about the playoff."

McPherson missed a long birdie putt to knock her out, and Seon Hwa Lee rolled her put offthe right edge of the cup and in to get to 15 under. That knocked out Jane Park and left only Meena Lee with a chance to tie.

Meena Lee hit a driver and 3-wood to about 100 yards on the18th hole. Her approach shot hit in a similar spot to Seon Hwa Lee's, but the ball didn't spin back toward the hole. It stopped in nearly the spot it hit the green about 20 feet from the hole.

After a long look at the birdie putt, Meena Lee took three practice swings behind the ball and stepped up to hit. Her birdie attempt slid left of the hole to give Seon Hwa Lee the victory.
