UPDATE: Power out to more than 100,000 in state

More than 100,000 electric customers were without power Tuesday morning as a blast of winter weather dumped freezing rain and sleet on parts of the state.

Freezing rain has been accumulating since Monday afternoon and is forecast to continue throughout Wednesday.

Entergy was reporting more than 64,775 customers without power, most in the central-northeast section of the state.

Power was out to a little over 54,695 SWEPCO customers in Northwest Arkansas, with the majority of them - 8,247 - being in Washington County.

The North Arkansas Electric Cooperative also is reporting homes and businesses without power - 12,000 of them.

Entergy has posted an interactive tool showing what areas are affected by the power failures, breaking it down by county. View the map here.

SWEPCO is also tracking power failures. That map can be viewed here.

The areas hardest hit appear to be in northeast Arkansas, particularly around Harrison and Mountain Home.

Ice had built up as much as an inch thick around Mountain Home and the Entergy said about 5,800 customers were blacked out there as the weight of ice brought down power lines.

Crews were fanning out across the state to restore power where they could.

Arkansas utility officials warned customers to prepare for up to three days without power, and many heeded the warning. At a Lowe's in Fayetteville, sales of generators were up and shoppers were buying batteries, flashlights, kerosene lamps and oil and electrical cords.

"This appears that it could be very significant," said Arkansas highway department spokesman Randy Ort. "I'm hoping people are paying attention to the forecast and will not be going out. It just takes a thin layer of ice to lose control."
