KLRE to air tryout concerts

by The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette | October 9, 2009 at 2:36 a.m.

— Radio station KLRE-FM, 90.5, will broadcast all five of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s conductor-finalist concerts, starting at 8 p.m. today with the Sept. 12-13 “Opening Night and Tchaikovsky” concert featuring violinist Karen Gomyo and conductor candidate Arthur Post.

The program included the Violin Concerto by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky and the Symphony No. 2 by Jean Sibelius.

The orchestra is “auditioning” five guest conductors for the post of music director to succeed David Itkin, who is stepping down at the end of the 2009-10 season.

The Oct. 17-18 concerts, with pianist Andrew von Oeyen soloing in Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto with conductor candidate Philip Mann on the podium (also conducting Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony), is tentatively set to air at 8 p.m. Oct. 30.

Program Director Wayne Angerame says he hopes to also use that Friday night time slot to air concerts by the Conway Symphony and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s Artspree series.
