NLR forecasters sending out extra weather balloons

The National Weather Service in North Little Rock says it’s sending up twice as many weather balloons as normal to help with the forecasting of Tropical Storm Alex.

Meteorologists in North Little Rock normally send out two weather balloons a day, at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. This week, they’ll send up extra balloons at 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., at the request of the National Hurricane Center.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Alex is expected to become a hurricane Tuesday. Its center is on a track from Yucatan headed for the Texas-Mexico border and away from the oil spill area off Louisiana.
