Second thoughts

— McCann’s dad tough to impress

Dallas Cowboys rookie Bryan McCann was harassed by teammates, particularly Dez Bryant and Roy Williams, after being tackled in the open field Sunday by Detroit kicker Dave Rayner on a first-half kickoff return.

“Dez told me he wasn’t talking to me. Roy came and told me to go sit down. I was in time out and couldn’t return the next two kickoffs,” McCann said. “Everybody was giving me a lot of grief about it.”

That changed when McCann grabbed a second-half punt after it was batted out of the end zone and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown to spark the Cowboys in their 35-19 victory.

“They forgot about it today,” McCann said Monday.

“Definitely haven’t heard a word about it.”

Except from his dad.

“He called me and said, ‘Don’t think I forgot about you getting tackled by the kicker,’ ” McCann said. “I said, ‘Dang, I thought I made it out of that.’ ” Tiger’s trade-in

One way PGA Tour players could decide on their vote for player of the year would be to ask themselves this question: “ Who’s season would I trade for mine?”

That yielded this answer from Tiger Woods.

“Just about anyone else’s,” he said with a laugh.

The ballots have been mailed to Tour members, who have until next Tuesday to submit their votes.

Seeing red

The harshest punishment soccer players can usually expect for berating a referee is a suspension or fine - not 24 weeks in jail.

But then most players don’t respond to the threat of a red card by driving a car on the field and at the official.

Amateur player Joseph Rimmer became incensed by a referee’s refusal to award a free kick during a game earlier this year between Lonsdale and Harrington in northwest England. Rimmer thought he was about to be penalized by referee David Harkness, so he told him: “If you book me or send me off, you know what will happen.”

Not likely.

Rimmer, who works as fitness instructor and nightclub doorman, stormed off, fetched his Range Rover and drove it across the grass. Harkness was not hurt.

Tennessee talk

From Reggie Hayes of The New-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Ind.:

“University of Tennessee men’s basketball Coach Bruce Pearl has been suspended for eight games by the Southeastern Conference for violations of NCAA rules. Pearl will still travel with the team.

“ ‘I’ll be like the injured point guard,’ Pearl said.

“I think he meant to say he’ll be like the injured point guard who mocks his own NCAA rules violations.”

“Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young suffered a thumb injury, reportedly tossed his shoulder pads into the stands and had an argument with Coach Jeff Fisher after a loss to the [Washington] Redskins. Young stormed out of the locker room.

“Later, a recently signed Titans receiver said, ‘Hold on, I thought I was the Randy Moss on this team.’ ”Quote of the day “We’ll see if he’s nice to

me, I’ll call more plays for him.” Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino on tight end D.J. Williams’ pursuit of the school record for receptions
