SEC MEN: Gaskins, Ole Miss prevail

— Trevor Gaskins scored a careerhigh 24 points and Chris Warren added 20 as Mississippi defeated previously unbeaten Penn State 84-71 on Friday night.

Gaskins was 6 of 11 from three-point range as the Rebels (3-1) went on an 11-1 run to take a 70-59 lead with 4:59 left. Penn State (4-1) never got closer than eight points in the final four minutes.

Nick Williams and Terrance Henry added 15 and 13 points, respectively, for the Rebels, who finished 27 of 52 (52 percent) from the field. The Rebels shot a season-best 13 of 29 (45 percent) from three-point range.

Talor Battle had 26 points, 4 assists and 3 steals to lead Penn State. David Jackson had 17 points, and Jeff Brooks added 15 points and a gamehigh nine rebounds for the Nittany Lions.

Ole Miss led 40-34 at the half and led by as many as 11 points on two occasions.

MISSISSIPPI STATE 92, TROY 83, OT

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Ravern Johnson scored 33 points to lead Mississippi State to an overtime victory over Troy.

Mississippi State (3-0) opened the overtime period on a 10-4 run and never trailed the rest of the game.

Troy (1-3) led 38-34 at halftime and for most of the second half. But a late 15-2 run gave the Bulldogs a 67-65 lead, their first of the second half, with 4:54 to play.

Trailing 74-71 with 2.5 seconds remaining, Trojans guard Vernon Taylor hit a three-pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime.

Brian Bryant scored 15 points for the Bulldogs, while Riley Benock added 12. Kodi Augustus finished with 11 and Jalen Steele chipped in 10.

Taylor paced the Trojans with 24 points and Bernard Toombs added 19. Levan Patsatsia scored 15 points, Travis Lee 12 and Shawntez Patterson 11.
