Garvan Gardens to host shade garden workshop

— If you want to learn more, plan to attend “The Shady Side of Gardening” workshop at Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 8.

The workshop will focus on plants that thrive in shade, as well as their care and maintenance. Topics include:hostas and companion plants; woodland shrubs; designing woodland and Japanese gardens; coleus; and tropical shade plants. Featured presenters include Janet Carson, horticulture specialist with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service; Bob Byers, Garvan’sresident landscape architect; Master Gardener Larry Averill; hosta expert Rand Retzloff of Grand Designs; and Glenn Stokes of Stokes Tropicals in Jeanerette, La.

Cost is $45 for members of the garden and $55 for nonmembers. Immediately following the workshop, participants will be free to shop the gardens’ annual plant and landscape sale, where they are sure to find a quantity of “can’t-do-without” shade and bedding plants.
