Horses, burros available for adoption in Searcy

— An adoption event will be held this week in Searcy for residents who wish to take home horses and burros that have been rescued by the Bureau of Land Management.

The bureau says it took in the animals because of drought and wildfire conditions in western states. The adoption event begins Friday at the White County Fairgrounds. Forty horses and 40 burros will be available for adoption at a cost of $125 per animal.

The bureau’s Shayne Banks tells The Daily Citizen that officials chose Searcy because they thought several residents would be interested in taking home the animals.

The adoption event will run until Sunday afternoon. Since 1973, the bureau has placed more than 225,000 animals in approved homes across the country.
