— 100 YEARS AGO May 25, 1912

City Collector James Lawson yesterday submitted the names of about 1,500 owners of dogs in Little Rock to Police Chief Fred Cogswell and the police will immediately round up all who have not paid license and order them into court. The chief said yesterday that old excuses such as “Sorry, but Tray died last week,” and “We sent Fido to the country day before yesterday,” will not serve this year.

50 YEARS AGO May 25, 1962

Rep. Dale Alford, who showed his “Alford Bandwagon” to newsmen yesterday, said he would appear at three cities this weekend in his campaign for governor. Alford has converted a house trailer into a mobile campaign headquarters. He said it would be on the roadmost of the time between now and election day, July 31. The gubernatorial hopeful plans to appear at the poultry festival in Hope tonight. He journeys to Springdale tomorrow and attends a rodeo in Fort Smith on Monday.

The skies threatened throughout the day, but a late shower failed to dampen the spirits of a record crowd or extinguish the spectacular fireworks display that concluded Riverfest ’87 on Sunday night. Rain began falling when a soloist with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, in a medley of songs from “The Sound of Music,” sang a line about “raindrops on roses.” A light shower began then, and continued throughout the rest of the symphony’s performance and the fireworks display.

Local forecasters predict high ozone concentrations this summer for central Arkansas, which, if it proves true, would leave the region vulnerable to federal sanctions for poor air quality. “It’s a serious business issue, period. And it’s a serious health issue, period,” said Pulaski County Judge Buddy Villines. Villines and several other local and state leaders gathered Friday to observe the start of ozone season, which typically runs from Memorial Day weekend through September.
