College to search for new president

POCAHONTAS - Black River Technical College in northeast Arkansas will soon be looking for a new president after the school’s board of trustees Friday voted not to extend President Wayne Hatcher’s contract.

Hatcher’s current contract expires June 30, 2014.

Board members didn’t give a specific reason for their decision, but board Chairman Sue Gibson told The Jonesboro Sun that they’re going in a new direction.

“We have looked into the future, and it’s the direction we want to take the college,” Gibson told the newspaper.

Attempts to reach Hatcher by phone were not successful, according to The Sun.

Black River Technical College is a two-year school with more than 2,000 students enrolled at its Pocahontas and Paragould campuses. About 90 percent of its degree-seeking students transfer to Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, The Sun reported.

Hatcher replaced former President Richard Gaines in July 2011.

The search for a new president will likely begin during the board’s next meeting in February, The Sun reported.
