Man, 40, charged in Garland County murder

Police have charged a 40-year-old man in second-degree murder, the Garland County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Saturday.

About 10:11 p.m. Friday, police responded to a report about a male, later identified as Shea O'Neill, trying to flag down a car near Amity Road and S. Moore Road, according to the news release. The county sheriff's office said O'Neill was bloody and had head injuries.

About 10:20 p.m., three people — one woman and two men — had arrived at Mercy Hospital in Hot Springs in a private vehicle, the release states. One of the men, 23-year-old Eston Hogue, had a stab wound to his neck and was covered in blood. Hogue later died from his injury.

According to the release, O'Neill said he and the woman were traveling on Amity Road in her vehicle when two people struck O'Neill's head. They were hiding in the vehicle's back seat, he said.

O'Neill said he was hit 15 to 20 times and said he pulled out his gun to defend himself, the release states. His gun was taken from him, which prompted O'Neill to use a knife and to lunge in his attackers' direction. O'Neill said he had cut one of his attackers and was abandoned on the side of the road after the fight.

However, one of the three people said that everyone including O'Neill were going to smoke marijuana and had pulled onto the side of Amity Road to use the restroom, the county sheriff's office said. The person said O'Neill and one of the men got into a "verbal altercation," which caused O'Neill to lunge from the front seat to the back seat.

The county sheriff's office said O'Neill's statements were inconsistent with the investigation's information. O'Neill was charged in second-degree murder, a class A felony.

The release states O'Neill was taken to a hospital for observation, where he is at this time, and that he sustained unspecified injuries from the fight.
