Greenland Falls, Blanked In First Half

GREENLAND — Green Forest kept its unblemished 3A-1 record intact with a dominating first half in a 42-21 victory over Greenland on Friday at Jonathan Ramey Memorial Field.

The Tigers (6-2, 5-0) outgained the host Pirates 312-76 in the first half while building an insurmountable 42-0 lead.

“The potential is there for us to be better than what we showed in the first half,” Greenland coach Lee Larkan said. “We get down and sometimes we don’t always fight it.”

Green Forest marched 13 plays on the opening drive of the game, climaxing it with a 1-yard sneak from quarterback Treyton Anderson on fourth-and-goal for a 7-0 lead.

Anderson was just getting started. He threw a 60-yard strike to Clayton Watson for a 14-0 lead just under nine minutes into the game, and then kept it himself on third-and-9 from 52 yards out with 19 seconds left in the quarter.

That made it 21-0 Tigers, and he found paydirt three more times in the second quarter from distances of 5, 4 and 34 yards for the 42-point halftime cushion.

Greenland (4-4, 3-2) only mustered two first downs in the opening half, both of which came on the final drive on passes from Farrar.

Larkan said he couldn’t repeat what he said at intermission, but whatever was said fired up Calvin Giddens, as the star Pirate tailback scored twice in the third quarter to cut the lead to 28.

Cahill Jackson finalized the scoring when he hauled in a 73-yard pass from Farrar against the Tiger reserves with just under nine minutes left in the contest.

“They’re a good football team,” Larkan said of Green Forest. “Maybe we aren’t. They do the good things, they get off and hit you and we’re kind of passive. But we will play better next week.”

EXTRA POINTS

Green Forest’s Anderson ran for 102 yards on only eight carries, accounting for all six Tiger touchdowns.

Farrar completed all five passes he threw in the second half for 155 yards and a score.

Both teams lost a fumble, with Greenland’s coming in the first half and the Tigers very late in the game.
