Undertones of jazz enhance Black Hall of Fame evening

The Arkansas Black Hall of Fame induction ceremony always proves to be a multifaceted event: a way to honor those who give of themselves; an educational tool; a fundraiser whose beneficiaries may prove future inductees; and a chance to get dressed up and have a great time. The 21st annual ceremony - held Oct. 19 in the Wally Allen Ballroom of the Statehouse Convention Center - did not disappoint.

Preceding the black-tie fundraiser was a VIP reception in the Grand Hall of the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion. Guests enjoyed light hors d’oeuvres and stepped into a receiving line to meet the inductees:

Morris Hayes, former director for Prince’s New Power Generation band, accompanied by his mother, Maxine Hayes

Raye Jean Montague, internationally recognized engineer and graphic designer, accompanied by her son, David Montague

Gerald Alley, chief executive officer and president of Con-Real Construction, accompanied by his wife, Candace

American Taekwondo Association Chief Master Richard Anderson, founder of Anderson’s Taekwondo, accompanied by Cheryl Cook

Willie Roaf, member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, accompanied by Angela Hernandez

And the late Art Porter Jr., jazz saxophonist and recording artist, represented by his mother, Pauline Porter, and son Arrington Porter.

Highlights of the ceremony included a rap tribute by Chane “Epiphany” Morrow with dancing by the Tidwell Project, a demonstration by the students of Anderson’s Taekwondo, a keyboard performance by Hayes, and a jazz violin performance by Lexington Porter, Art Porter Jr.’s nephew. In addition to remarks by inductees, their presenters, and event chairman Charles Stewart, Gov. Mike Beebe offered a short congratulatory speech.

Proceeds from the gala will be used by the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame Foundation for grants to organizations in the black community devoted to youth development, health and wellness, education and economic development.
