100 YEARS AGO April 7, 1914 McGEHEE - A force of men is numbering all houses and placing the street names at most important corners. This step was necessary before free delivery of mail could be obtained from the Postoffice Department. It is expected that McGehee will have a free delivery within 60 days. Postmaster M.A. Tucker has taken the matter up with the department and as soon as the requirements are complied with free delivery will be allowed, it is said.

50 YEARS AGO April 7, 1964

Polk County Chancellor Wesley Howard issued an order today transferring the Archie Cude children to the Child Welfare Division of the State Welfare Department at Little Rock. Custody of the children was turned over to the division Monday for the purpose of having them vaccinated so they can attend school. The custody was ordered by the Arkansas Supreme Court, which said Cude could not legally prevent his children from being vaccinated for school attendance.

25 YEARS AGO April 7, 1989

Accusations by a produce store that an adjacent butcher shop is selling kangaroo meat has thing shopping in Southwest Little Rock. Thursday, the dispute landed in Pulaski County Chancery Court. It is between Shelby’s Meat Market at 4713 Base Line Road and the Base Line Produce Mart at 4729 Base Line Road. The businesses are in the same building and next to each other. Stephen Shelby said in his lawsuit that the owners of the produce store - Jerry Rainey and Robert Bird - have posted signs on their store saying Shelby sells kangaroo and horse meat and “When it is ground up, you don’t know what it is.” Another sign said Shelby was a liar.Shelby said in an affidavit accompanying the lawsuit that the store window was broken Wednesday and he is “fearful” other such acts may occur. The lawsuit said the resultant publicity has “breached the business expectations” of the butcher shop.

10 YEARS AGO April 7, 2004

School districts will be charged about $16 million more for employee retirement benefits in the fiscal year that starts July 1, the trustees for the Arkansas Teacher Retirement System decided Tuesday. Their 10-2 vote increases from 13 to 14 the percentage of employee payroll that the system charges districts. Last year the trustees raised the percentage from 12 to 13, effective July 1, 2003.
