HOT SPRINGS -- Former County Judge Thurston P. Farmer today bought the county poor farm. The sale was by closed competitive bids. The price was $4,200 cash. This sale abolishes the farm for the poor of the county and Judge Mooney today said that the proceeds of the sale will be used to establish a fund for the maintenance of the poor and that he expects to take care of the paupers of the county through the medium of the pension system.

PINE BLUFF -- A group of 15 Negroes was turned away from the Oakland Park swimming pool Tuesday and both the Oakland and Townsend Park pools were closed. Police Chief Norman Young said that the group of Negroes arrived at the park carrying swimming suits, asked to be admitted at the gate and were turned away. The 50 white children swimming at the time were requested by the management to leave the pool, and the facilities were locked. The chief said the demonstrators left quietly. He said that there were no incidents of violence and that no arrests were made. When the pool for white patrons was closed, the swimming area at the adjacent Townsend Park for Negroes also was emptied and closed for the day.

SPRINGDALE -- Like a recommissioned battleship, a repainted statue of Popeye, returned by pranksters, will soon resume his silent watch outside a spinach warehouse. Besides giving Popeye a paint job, Allen Canning Co. is working on a way to re-erect the monument to spinach vigor "that we think will be pretty secure," David Allen, spokesman for the family owned business, said Friday. The 7-foot, 200-pound hollow fiberglass statue was stolen last month from a pedestal in front of the warehouse on North Thompson Street.

• Gov. Mike Huckabee, who is being recognized by two national media organizations this week for his fight against fat, on Wednesday defended the state's efforts to measure the obesity of schoolchildren. He was responding to a caller to his monthly radio show who complained that the state has no business telling people to wear seat belts or telling children they are fat. The caller said that was a parental responsibility. Huckabee said personal health and safety is the state's interest because of medical bills the state often ends up paying.
