City officials issued a stern warning to Little Rock’s bookies today that the current war being waged against gambling “is not a flash-in-the-pan thing” but will be a continuing effort “from now on.” The warning came from Mayor Byron R.Morse during a presentation of commendation to Police Chief R. E. Brians and the entire police department for “tireless effort” in tracking down and arresting various gambling figures during the past two weeks. Morse said police efforts would go beyond the 43-day racing meet at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs “from now on.”

The big time, fast-money city boys are at odds again with “Bubba.” And the fightin’ words nearly divided the Capitol last week. “There is a lot of resentment. It got to the point this week where many rural lawmakers wanted to strike back viciously at Pulaski County,” said Rep. Lloyd George of Danville (Yell County), the colorful standard-bearer for rural Arkansas. “They’ve got to represent their counties and we have to represent our county,” countered Rep. Doug Wood of Sherwood, a leader in the Pulaski County delegation in the House. “They may not love us, but they’ll respect us.” Bubba - the House’s mythical mascot who typifies rural lawmakers - was slighted Wednesday when the House broke into four caucuses to pick its leaders. The 25-member delegation from within the boundaries of the 2nd U.S.Congressional District spent the first 10 minutes of its meeting methodically filling vacated spots on the Legislative Audit Committee and Legislative Council.
