Monticello mayor, ex-legislator dies

Allen Maxwell Jr., 70, a former state representative in his fourth year as mayor of Monticello, died in his sleep Sunday night, city officials said Monday.

He had filed to run for re-election this year.

In a news release, Andrea Jo Chambers, Monticello’s city clerk and now acting mayor, called Maxwell’s service to the city “immeasurable,” adding that “we deeply mourn his passing.All your prayers will be appreciated by his friends and family.”

Chambers will continue serving as mayor until the City Council appoints an interim mayor.
