Woman re-enters burning home, dies

A 60-year-old North Little Rock woman was killed in a house fire Thursday night after she went back into the home to retrieve something, officials said.

The North Little Rock Fire Department responded to a fire at 1508 War Eagle Drive around 11:30 p.m. in the Indian Hills neighborhood. When firefighters were able to get the fire under control and enter the home, they found Rebecca Kennedy in one of the bathrooms, according to a report from the North Little Rock Police Department.

"The woman did make it out OK, but she went back into the house to get something and didn't make it back out," said John Pflasterer, chief fire marshal of the North Little Rock Fire Department.

The woman's husband, Michael Kennedy, 68, told police he was asleep when his wife woke him up and told him the TV on the back porch was on fire, according to the North Little Rock police report. He tried to put out the fire with a water hose, but it was too hot to be near.

Outside the home, Michael Kennedy told rescuers he couldn't find his wife and thought she went back to find the dog, but he found the dog outside, according to the report.
