Fayetteville street to host water slide

FAYETTEVILLE -- Several streets in the downtown entertainment district will be closed Sunday while a 1,000-foot-long water slide is set up on Dickson Street between St. Charles and West avenues.

The four-block stretch of Dickson Street will be off-limits to vehicular traffic from 4 a.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday, according to a city news release. Dickson Street sidewalks will remain open to pedestrians and spectators.

Four other streets -- Church Avenue, Locust Avenue, Shipley Alley and School Avenue -- will be closed to through traffic between Dickson and Spring streets. Rollston Avenue and Thompson Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Dickson and Watson streets.

Parking will be free in city-owned lots and on-street spaces that serve commercial properties, according to the news release. Event parking is not allowed on private property or in residential zones.

Cars left on Dickson Street past 4 a.m. Sunday will be towed to a gravel parking lot at 211 N. Church St. at no charge to the owner.

The water slide is being brought to Fayetteville by Slide the City, a for-profit company based in Salt Lake City. Part of the event's proceeds will benefit Soldier On Service Dogs, a nonprofit organization that raises, trains and gives service dogs to veterans who have post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injuries.

More information about the event is available at slidethecity.com. An event parking map is available on the Soldier On Service Dogs website: soldieronservicedogsinc.org.
