Man accused of shooting out front tire of wife's car

A North Little Rock man is accused of opening fire once inside during an argument with his wife and then shooting out a tire of her car as she tried to leave, authorities said.

William Cates, 38, was booked into the Pulaski County jail early Friday morning on a charge of aggravated assault on a family or household member.

North Little Rock police say they were called to the couple's home on Melanie Lane in North Little Rock about 6 p.m. Thursday.

The victim told investigators Cates arrived home intoxicated and during an argument retrieved a revolver, pushed her down and fired once about 8 feet away from her, according to an arrest report.

Cates' wife left and tried to drive away, but Cates followed and shot the driver-side front tire of her vehicle, the report said.

"Mr. Cates then grabbed his wife's hair and told her that she was 'going to watch him kill himself,'" police added.

The report noted two youths, ages 7 and 15, were in the home during the altercation.

Cates remained in jail later Friday morning with bail not yet set pending an initial court appearance.
