THURSDAY’S STARS

Betting favorites won 5 of 9 races and two others finished second on the card: Copse ($4) in the first; Como Se Llama ($4.40) in the second; Shore to Shore ($4.40) in the fifth; Double Ours ($4.40) in the eighth; and Loud Cat ($8.40) in the ninth. Two other favorites, Arwalkingdeputy ($3.40, $3.00) in the third and Heat of Valor ($2.80, $2.40) in the fourth, ran second. Double Ours turned in the most impressive equine performance in the optional claiming eighth race, swooping the field and drawing off to win by 3¼ lengths in 1:10.69, the fastest time of the day at the distance.

COMPETITION, COMPETITION

Nine different jockeys rode winners for nine different trainers, including victories by Ramon Vasquez (13 winners) and Shaun Bridgmohan (11), the top two jockeys in the standings. Leading trainer Frederico Villafranco (7 winners) extended his lead in the trainer standings when Shore to Shore won in the fifth.

FINAL FURLONG

The Oaklawn media department reported Thursday that Ride On Curlin is being pointed to the Feb. 14 $100,000 Essex Handicap, according to trainer Billy Gowan. Ride On Curlin returned from a seven-month layoff Jan. 15 to win a 6-furlong allowance race with a strong stretch run. Ride On Curlin, a 4-year-old son of Curlin, was the second-place finisher in the 2014 Arkansas Derby and Preakness Stakes before being distanced in the Belmont Stakes on June 7. … Springsteen Road, injured in Saturday’s $100,000 American Beauty Stakes, underwent surgery Tuesday at Rood & Riddle Clinic in Lexington, Ky.
