First lady hits opening note at Wildwood Academy music, arts event

Music goes beyond making our lives more beautiful, first lady Susan Hutchinson said June 30 at the Governor's Mansion. Music is helpful with learning skills, brain building and healing, among other things. The first lady spoke to guests attending a musical performance in support of Wildwood Academy of Music and the Arts in the Great Hall.

Hutchinson, an erstwhile schoolteacher, is honorary chairman of the academy's task force, which provides guidance for the music education programs.

"You can't have too much music," she said.

The evening began with a reception and music by students who are attending the academy at Wildwood Park for the Arts. Camille Crowder and Chandler Ford played a piano duet and flutist Kaelei Atkins played several duets with violinist Dustin Yoder.

The program featured the Spektral Quartet with Doyle Armbrust, Clara Lyon, Russell Rolen and Austin Wulliman, all of Chicago. The quartet was introduced by Daniel Black, director of the academy's instrumental music program. He noted that in addition to playing for the students, the quartet members have also been coaching and teaching the young musicians during the summer program.

The summer programs are designed for students 6-18. New this year is a vocal program directed by Bevan Keating. The academy's mission is to bring the highest standards in music and arts education to students of all ages and backgrounds in central Arkansas.
