Memphis woman charged with running over 7 with car

MEMPHIS — Memphis police say a 22-year-old woman has been arrested after hitting seven people with her car nearly two months ago.

Police said Ashley Smith fled the scene after hitting three women and four children at a Memphis apartment complex April 7.

The Commercial Appeal reported that Smith was arrested Tuesday and is facing seven counts of aggravated assault. She confessed to police that she ran over the victims, but did not say why in her affidavit. The children ranged in age from 12 to 17.

The victims were taken to the hospital, some with broken legs, hips and arms. She and another person, 23-year-old Chrissy Wright, were arrested after a witness came forward on Monday. Wright is charged with accessory after the fact of aggravated assault.
