Key-swallowing inmates charged

Two Pulaski County jail inmates face additional charges after they took handcuff keys and swallowed them over the weekend, the sheriff's office reported.

Jason Phillips, 27, "snatched" handcuffs and handcuff keys from a jailer about 8:45 p.m. Saturday, according to an arrest report. The handcuffs were found in his toilet. Through X-rays, medical personnel Sunday determined that he'd swallowed the keys.

Also Saturday, inmate Tony Brooks, 29, "snatched" handcuff keys from a jailer while being secured in his cell at 9:29 p.m., an arrest report states. Jailers searched the cell and strip-searched Brooks before determining the keys were in his stomach.

Sheriff's office spokesman Capt. Carl Minden said Monday he didn't know whether Brooks and Phillips had "passed" the keys, or if jailers had recovered them.

Phillips, a federal prisoner from Tennessee being held on battery and assault charges, and Brooks, a Little Rock man accused of capital murder, were both additionally charged with furnishing prohibited articles. They remained in the jail Monday.

Minden said both inmates were being held on administrative segregation status, meaning they're kept away from the general population and their activities are limited.

Police don't find link in 2 shootings

Police believe shootings that occurred Friday and Sunday in the same block south of Little Rock Central High School are not related.

Officers responded about 7:40 p.m. Friday to UAMS Medical Center, where Sean Jones, 23, was being treated for a gunshot wound on his left thigh. His injuries were serious enough for doctors to consider amputating the leg, police reported. Jones' condition was unknown Monday.

Jones, of North Little Rock, told investigators he'd been sitting on the porch at his girlfriend's house at 1810 S. Rice St. when he heard gunfire, according to a police report. He said he realized he'd been shot and ran inside.

Police were called at 4:31 a.m. Sunday to 1812 S. Rice St., next door to where Jones was shot. Two teenage girls told officers they'd been standing outside the residence and heard gunfire. They ran inside and one of the girls, age 17, saw that a bullet had grazed her lower right abdomen, according to police.

Investigators found a .380-caliber shell casing south of the house.

The girl was taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital for treatment. Her injuries were not life-threatening.

Police spokesman officer Richard Hilgeman said detectives don't believe the two shootings are connected. No arrests had been made late Monday.
