ROGERS — A chicken barbecue set for Saturday will benefit the Whitey Smith Scholarship fund.
The scholarship honors Smith, who is well known for his commitment to the youth of Rogers. Scholarship recipients are students at Rogers High School and Heritage High School who have participated in extracurricular activities, such as sports, pom and cheer or band, according to a news release.
Smith has organized fundraising chicken barbecues since the 1950s with proceeds going to youth sports and organizations supporting young people, the release stated.
His Chicken Cookin’ Crew will barbecue the chicken at Saturday’s event. The chicken will be sold near the pit at Second and Locust streets. Sales will start about 9:30 a.m.
