Bridge work to close I-40 lanes overnight next week

Bridge construction work on Interstate 40 in North Little Rock will require overnight lane closures next week, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said Friday.

Crews will place structural steel for the Norman Road and Marche Road bridges on I-40, state Highway and Transportation Department spokesman Jeff Whatley said in a news release.

The closures will alternate between eastbound and westbound lanes between mile markers 143.5 and 148, Whatley said.

The lanes will close from 8 p.m to 5 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, the release states. Short traffic stops will occur from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night during the construction work, Whatley said.

The construction project is part of the agency's Connecting Arkansas Program that includes widening 5.1 miles of I-40 to three lanes in each direction, Whatley said.

The closures will be weather-permitting and traffic will be controlled using barrels, electronic message boards and warning signs, the release states.
