WASHINGTON COUNTY

Temple Shalom of Northwest Arkansas in Fayetteville, 699 N. Sang Ave., presents Rabbi Laura Lieber speaking Oct. 23-25. Lieber participates in candle-lighting service at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 23, with a family service at 6 p.m. and a potluck meal following. She speaks at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 24 on “Mothers From Ancient and Medieval Worlds,” and again from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 25 on “College, Jewish Studies and Jewish Youth.”

Lieber is a graduate of Temple Shalom’s religious school, and the first female rabbi from Arkansas. She is a professor of Jewish studies at Duke University and director of the Duke Center for Jewish Studies.

Sequoyah United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, 1910 N. Old Wire Road, has opened its 10th annual Pumpkin Patch on the lawn of the church. The sale of pumpkins and gourds support a Navajo Indian reservation in New Mexico and the church’s own youth ministries.

The Pumpkin Patch remains open through Oct. 30. Hours are 10 a.m to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Saturday and noon to 7:30 p.m Sunday.

Mercy and Grace Cathedral in Springdale, 5185 Apple Road, offers “The Art of Marriage,” a three-week video class, meeting from 5 to 8 p.m Nov. 1, Nov. 8 and Nov. 15. Topics include the design of marriage, principles, overcoming isolation, communication, conflict, intimacy and legacy.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Northwest Arkansas in Fayetteville, a North American Lutheran Church at 2901 E. Zion Road, Suite 17, sponsors a bake sale and craft fair from 4 to 8 p.m. today.

First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Fayetteville, 1755 E. Rolling Hills Dr., presents Laura Lapointe, speaking on “The Way Out For You,” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Her presentation, including music, focuses on freedom from addiction, fear, stress and any other desperate situations.

Lapointe serves on the Christian Science Board of Lectureship and sings in a gospel choir. She holds a master’s degree of divinity.

St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 1722 N. Starr Dr., and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 224 N. East Ave., both in Fayetteville, present their choirs and orchestra together in free performances of Requiem by Maurice Durufle on Nov. 1-2 and Nov. 8.

The choirs sing at 5 p.m. Nov. 1 for the All Saint’s Day Evensong at St. Paul’s and at 7 p.m. Nov. 22 for the All Soul’s Day Mass at St. Joseph. An additional concert is planned for 4 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Subiaco Abbey, 405 N. Subiaco Ave., in Subiaco.

Charles A. Rigsby, organist and choirmaster at St. Paul’s, conducts the choirs. Linda P. Kelly, organist and musical director at St. Joseph, provides the organ music. Miho Oda Sakon, a principal in the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, serves as concertmaster. Soloists include Rebecca I. Harrison, soprano; Abby Carr, contralto; and Christopher Senty, baritone-base.

St. Raphael Catholic Church in Springdale, 1386

S. West End St., sponsors its annual Brewtober Chilifest from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 17. The chili cookoff and home-brewing competition features more than 50 chili recipes and 20 craft brews, and includes live music and a silent auction. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and only available to persons 21 years of age or older.

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tontitown, 154 E. Henri de Tonti Blvd., presents the Rev. Leo Patalinghug in a mission Oct. 17-19. Patalinghug is the host and founder of Grace Before Meals, a mission to strengthen families around the dinner table, and “Savoring Our Faith” on the EWTN. He defeated the chef in “Throw Down! Bobby Flay!”

Patalinghug will present a cooking demonstration at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 17, with the theme “Spicing Up Married Life.” Tickets, which include dinner, are $20 purchased in advance.

Patalinghug speaks on “Saints and Mary” at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 and the Lord’s Table at 7 p.m. Oct. 19. The Oct. 19 event follows the 6:30 Mass, and Adoration follows Patalinghug’s presentation.

First Presbyterian Church in Springdale, 100 S. Gutensohn Road, hosts a Pack Shack event at 9 a.m. today. Volunteers will pack 15,000 meals for the local community.

BENTON COUNTY

First Presbyterian Church in Bentonville, 901 N.E. J St., appoints two new members of its Music and Arts Academy. Jose Ortega has joined the faculty as an instructor of voice, and Gareth Ward is an instructor of guitar. Both are accepting new students.

A longtime resident of Northwest Arkansas, Ortega was studying law at the University of Arkansas when he was discovered. He studied under tenor Carol Bergonzi in Italy and the Manhattan School of Music. He performed with the Washington National Opera, the Crested Butte Festival in Colorado, the Opera Festival in Austria and Frankfurt, Germany, and the Tuscia Opera Festival in Italy. He has performed with Renee Fleming, Denyce Graves, Placido Domingo, Samuel Ramey, Sandra Rodvanowsky and Ildar Abradzakow.

Ward comes from North Wales and has been playing guitar for 30 years. He graduated from Bangor University and worked many years as a critical care nurse in England and with British Royal Navy. He volunteered his skills with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity and the Calcutta Rescue Fund of Italy. He completed studies in music theory and guitar performance at the University of West London. He moved to Northwest Arkansas last year and continues jazz guitar studies at Northwest Arkansas Community College.

First United Methodist Church in Bella Vista, 20 Boyce Drive, presents Gail Archer in a free organ concert at 3 p.m. Nov. 1.

Archer is a Grammy-nominated, international concert organist and lecturer. The music on her recordings span the 17th to 21st centuries. Her most recent compact disc is Bach, the Transcendent Genius. Archer is college organist at Vassar College, and director of the music program at Barnard College, Columbia University, where she conducts the Barnard-Columbia Chorus. She serves as director of the artist and young organ artist recitals at historic Central Synagogue, New York City.

First Baptist Church in Cave Springs, 322 S. Main St., celebrates its 135th anniversary today. The program begins at 10 a.m., followed by lunch and more activities, including singing and honoring “those who have had a special place in our church history — Loleta Farish, former pastors, ‘the 56 who were baptized May 9, 1954’ and others.”

St. Stephen Catholic Church in Bentonville, 1300 N.E. J St., hosts the fourth-annual local Friends of the Poor 5K run/walk at 6:30 a.m. today. The event is sponsored locally by the St. Stephen Benevolent Conference in association with the national Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Donations are accepted as entry fees.

Highland Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Bella Vista, 1500 Forest Hills Blvd., sponsors a meeting of the Disciples Women Fellowship at 10 a.m. today. Carolyn Walker speaks on “The Bent Over Woman.”

The church serves a fellowship meal after the morning service Sunday. Sales of the fried-chicken meals serve as a fundraiser for the church.

Peace Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Rogers, 805 W. Olrich St., offers Way Out Wednesdays for students in grades 5 to 12. WOW meets from 3 to 6:30 p.m. each Wednesday. A supper is served at 5:30 p.m., for students, their parents, church members and community members.

Bella Vista Lutheran Church, 1990 Forest Hills Blvd., offers the Senior Safety Academy of the Benton County SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Working Together) Council on Oct. 20. Topics include identity theft, scams targeted at seniors, safety issues with dementia, home safety, elder abuse, Smart 911, an open forum for questions and more.

The church’s Stamped With a Prayer (SWAP) ministry raised $1,000 for the Northwest Arkansas Women’s Shelter. Money is raised by the sale of the cards they make, which cost $2.50 each. The group’s next mission is Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry.

The United Lutheran Church of Bella Vista (ELCA), 100 Cooper Road, sponsors the Piecemakers in a workday from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday to mark the God’s Work, Our Hands day. The group will be tying quilts, and no sew skills are needed.

Members of the congregation mark Bread for the World Sunday on Oct. 18 by writing letters to elected officials with concerns for the hungry and powerless people in the world.

The church plans Trunk or Treat on Oct. 31. Donations of candy are accepted in the church narthex.

Strings Attached Ministries presents its fourth-annual Captivating Heart women’s retreat Friday to Oct. 18 at New Life Ranch in Colcord, Okla.
