Officer shot during traffic stop, man sought

England police are searching for a man who opened fire on an officer early Saturday during a traffic stop, police said.

Sgt. David Houser was shot about 2 a.m. Saturday by the driver of a Silver Tahoe or Yukon with tinted windows and an obstructed license plate, England police said in a statement.

The shooting occurred after Houser tried to initiate a traffic stop on Arkansas 15. The driver slowed, sped away and then finally stopped in the middle of the highway, police said.

Houser was shot in the chest when he approached the vehicle, police said, and his bullet-proof vest stopped the bullet. Houser returned fire before the man fled.

The suspect, who police say is armed and dangerous, is described as a Hispanic man who is possibly bald or has very short hair. The silver Tahoe or Yukon he was driving has tinted windows, and it may have bullet holes on the driver’s side.

Anyone with information is asked to call England police at (501) 842-2311.
