Arkansas voters can consider some limits on medical damages

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas voters will be allowed to consider limits on non-economic damages in lawsuits against health care providers and also limits on contingency fees lawyers could receive in medical injury cases.

The Secretary of State's office said Friday a group proposing an amendment to Arkansas' constitution submitted a sufficient amount of signatures to place the matter before voters Nov. 8.

The group Health Care Access for Arkansas needed to gather signatures from 84,859 registered voters — or 10 percent of the number of people who voted in the 2014 gubernatorial election. Secretary of State Mark Martin said his staff validated 92,997 signatures.

A medical marijuana proposal has already been approved for the ballot. Another medical marijuana measure could be validated for the ballot, as could one allowing casinos in three counties.
