Goshen council accepts police chief's resignation

GOSHEN -- The City Council met in a special meeting called by the mayor to accept the police chief's resignation Thursday evening.

The council went into executive session for 30 minutes and then announced the resignation of police chief David Edwards, formally known as the city marshal. The motion to accept his resignation passed 5-0. Alderman Brian Buell was not in attendance.

Goshen switched from a marshal's office to Police Department earlier this year. Mayor Max Poye, who will appoint the next chief of police, said he has someone in mind for the position but wouldn't comment on whom.

"I anticipate we will appoint one real soon," Poye said.

Poye said he didn't ask Edwards to resign.

Edwards, who has served as marshal since December 2005, said the job and on-call hours had just gotten to him.

"I am going to try for a career with less stress," he said. "I plan to stay in the area and focus on my passion for horses and farming."

The aldermen present wouldn't comment on their discussion during executive session, but praised Edwards for his time in office.

"He's been a great employee," said Andy Bethell, alderman. "I hope he doesn't leave Goshen, to be honest with you. I hope he stays out here to be a neighbor."

"And I will echo all of that," said Dick Seddon, alderman.
