A man shot by an off-duty Little Rock police officer after he attempted to break into the officer's home in Conway on Saturday night remained in jail Monday, authorities said.

Conway police on Monday identified the man as 25-year-old Hershel Brigance and the officer as 24-year-old Lora Montano.

Montano told police that she awoke to her dog barking as someone tried to kick down her door, Conway Police Department spokesman LaTresha Woodruff said.

Montano grabbed her gun as she went to investigate the noise and found an intruder dressed all in black in her home, Woodruff said. Montano fired the gun, and the man fled, Woodruff said.

Brigance was arrested after he sought treatment for a gunshot wound at Conway Regional Hospital. Brigance said he had been robbed and shot in Little Rock, but police later concluded he was the man who broke into Montano's home on Gabriel Street, according to a news release from the police department.

Brigance was charged with residential burglary. He was being held without bond at the Faulkner County jail.

Montano remains on paid administrative leave until Conway police complete their criminal investigation, which is standard procedure for officers involved in shootings, police said.
