BLUE TIE BLUE JEAN BALL

Putting the pieces together to better understand autism

The Blue Tie Blue Jean Ball, Little Rock's annual Light It Up Blue fundraiser for Arkansas Autism Speaks, was held April 28 at Noah's Event Venue.

Guests were treated to music by Canvas and a buffet of hors d'oeuvres. Silent auctions items included "Master Pieces" -- large, puzzle piece-shaped paintings by local artists. The puzzle piece is an icon for Autism Speaks Arkansas. More artwork and other auction items were also offered.

About 225 guests, many sporting blue outfits or at least touches of blue, helped raise a little more than $15,000 for Arkansas Autism Speaks, which helps support the mission of the national organization, said event chairman Dawn Itzkowits. The local chapter also hosts the Arkansas Autism Speaks Walk in October and other events to help support families of people with autism.

"Some of these events," Itzkowits said, "include autism-friendly dining outings, picnics, bowling outings, free jump times with Altitude Trampoline Park. We also attend local health fairs to raise awareness of autism spectrum disorders and host an autism advocacy day at the Arkansas state Capitol every year."
