Travs rained out; doubleheader with Cardinals set

Shortly after the Arkansas Travelers and Springfield Cardinals took batting practice Thursday afternoon, the tarp was rolled out at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock.

The end result was the Travs postponing a game for the fourth time this season due to the weather.

The teams will make up the game today at 5:10 p.m. as part of a doubleheader to start the four-game series. The Travs already have a doubleheader scheduled June 16 with the Cardinals in Springfield, Mo., to make up an April 29 rainout.

Today's doubleheader will be the third this season for the Travs.

The Travs lost both games to San Antonio on April 11 and split with Tulsa on May 4.

The Travs (12-19) are now two days separated from the four-game sweep that the first-place Northwest Arkansas Naturals (18-12) gave them to put them in last place in the Texas League.

The Travs have lost six games in a row, and scoring has been the issue. Against the Naturals, they were shutout twice and scored just three runs in the series. The Naturals have the lowest ERA (3.46) in the league, but the Travs' hitting struggles began in their two losses to Tulsa. During the losing streak, the Travs have gone 7 for 46 (.152) with runners in scoring position.

"We always put ourselves in good situations, we just didn't come out with the hits we needed," Travs Manager Daren Brown said. "Every team goes through stretches of that sometimes. You never want to see, but I know that it happens. I just hope we can get out of it here at home."

Infield prospect Gianfranco Wawoe, who was batting .333 with 28 RBI in 27 games at High-A Modesto, was called up Thursday while Travs third baseman Jay Baum, who had a .192 batting average, was assigned to Modesto.
